Is it back to Substack then? I saw some fellow writers making the switch after the revelation that Revue was shutting down. I decided to give Substack a second look, and was surprised to see that they have an iOS app, a chat feature, and cross-posts. There also seems to be an effort being made toward discoverability, something I think is lacking from every other newsletter provider.
I really like Buttondown, but coming back to Substack I can’t deny that the Substack interface is more intuitive and easier to use.
Buttondown, much like Mailchimp and Tiny Letter, rely on you pushing readers from one app to another. Hoping folks on twitter or instagram or wherever will jump over to subscribe. It’s a hard sell, especially for those of us who don’t have large audiences. Substack seems to be steering toward being more of a social platform, and not just a newsletter delivery service. Which could be incredibly helpful in terms of discoverability and connecting with like-minded peers.
So it’s back to Substack. I still have issues with the platform and who they’ve favoured in the past, but right now it seems like the best and most intuitive free option.
I haven’t written off Buttondown either. I plan to keep checking in to see what updates they’ve made and how the service progresses. For now, Hello Void will live on Substack. Keep an eye out for new issues hitting your inbox soon.
If you were previously subscribed, there’s nothing you need to do. The email list has been automatically ported over. And I hope you’ll stick around.
Yeah, I’ve been kinda shocked by how much they r added to Substack while I was away. The community-building and discoverability tools are impressive.
